Many of you joined us for My Name Story exhibition last year at Nino Studio in Pioneer Square for AA&NHPI Heritage Month. We are returning this year for a smaller exhibit for AA&NHPI Heritage Month at Lucky Envelope Brewing in Ballard @luckyenvbrewing.I hope you'll join us!

The intention of this call is to gather artists for a group exhibition. My hope is to find a grant opportunity and submit as a group.I invite artists of the diaspora to submit works that address the experience of religious wounding, especially at the intersections of identity, culture, and/or place. I participated in a beautiful, impactful community

I participated in a beautiful, impactful community art project today by @delrosario.carina. People from all over sent in their burdens and the participants held and cared for them through stitching. Eventually these will become pillows and part of an exhibit at @seattleasainart.I could feel the weight of the burdens as I looked through them and my table mate cried as she stitched the one she felt drawn to. This is exactly what collective care looks like...showing up for community, even those we don't know, and carrying for just a moment what they need to put down. ❤️I plan to participate in more sewing circles. Let me know if you want to join. It was a wonderful experience and the kind of art that is most needed in the world today.

I know several of you are applying for Arts Project grant from 4Culture. Yay! It's due tomorrow so I thought I'd share a mindset that helps me actually enjoy grant writing.If you're having a hard time writing grants, remember this...Writing grants is just a way to advocate for something that's important to you...Focus on your WHY and make it about the work, not about you.[Image: Dark fonts in cap on light pink background with Artists Grants on top and content in middle.]

The world feels dark and overwhelming right now. H

The world feels dark and overwhelming right now. How do we get out of this? How do we protect us? are questions I'm pondering. I believe the way forward is collectivism and practicing collective care. Here is why...I resented growing up in a collectivist culture (Korean immigrant) because of its rigid authoritarianism and patriarchy. Add religion and I had an oppressive childhood with no room for self-expression and was taught my value rested entirely on other people (of course, the -isms contributed). Fast track decades later after spending my life making myself as small as possible, swallowing my voice, and wearing perfectionism as armor until I couldn't take it anymore. I swung the opposite way and focused entirely on individualism.Individualism gave me the time and space to figure out who I was outside of conditioning, to learn to belong to myself, and to recognize my inherent value. But as an immigrant woman of color, I could not stay there because that world is built on privilege and completely ignores the impact of systems of oppression and instead blames everything on individuals and their choices. I've returned to collectivism but on different terms...a version that values individual expression and differences while understanding our interdependence and need to support each other. It's a version that rejects competition and scarcity and finds joy in community.I am not perfect and won't apologize for it. I no longer make myself small and enjoy taking up space and making my voice heard. I believe that the more spaces there are that make room for our bravest, most whole selves, the more we'll experience collective liberation. I know it's possible because I've experienced this in places like @thefishbowlseattle, @chinatownbookclub, our little corner of the art world, and at work @cultureconnecting. Let's seek nourishment and joy in showing up for each other, imagining what is possible, and move forward collectively as a community.

A couple years ago, I started working on a body project. I've had it on hold since then but am inspired to work on it again and am applying for a grant for additional funding. That project has evolved, as I've evolved and while I had a specific vision for it then, it's now much bigger and incorporates additional important elements.If you applied years ago, I will reach out later this year to see if you're still interested.
